Also for this excursion we will go out by car and head north.
Once we have taken the asphalt road we will proceed in the direction of Barbarano Romano and once we arrive at the village cemetery we will take the road that we find on our right, from there we will continue for about three kilometers until we find a crossroads on a dirt road indicated by a sign as refreshment, we are in Caiolo, where we could leave the car and undertake a walk that will take us to explore a necropolis which contains the Queen’s Tomb.
We will go up and down a ridge and then cross a small stream which in the summer months we will find dry, pointing our rudder towards San Giuliano, an ancient castle now reduced to ruins but with a church still standing which gives us a suggestive opening along the surrounded path from Querce and Elci.
Before descending from the fortress we do not fail to visit the Roman baths, a show within a show, we will go back to the car where we can have a coffee from Mrs. Maria, manager of the small restaurant in Caiolo or if we want we could ask her to prepare her famous pappardelle with wild boar .
But our outing today doesn’t end here. We get back in the car and head towards the town of Barbarano Romano, where a sumptuous gate and surrounding walls invite us to leave our car. It is worth getting lost in the alleys of the village to find yourself in the small square overlooking the Biedano valley, giving us a view as far as the eye can see on a tuff canyon which is home to a dense oak forest.
We cannot get back to our car until we have visited the Fonte del Pisciarello, set in a spectacular setting dug into the tuff made even more evocative by the moss that covers it.
There we will like to get lost for a moment crossing the small bridge and crossing yet another cut in the tuff before proceeding towards our car.
